William Job Garland
William was born in Cardiff in 1874. In 1911 he was a cement burner and lived at 46 Glebe Street, Penarth with his wife Cecilia, and their daughters Edith, Margaret, Ethel, Katie and Thirza Garland. From Army records – Husband of Cecilia, father of Thursa, born 21st June 1907, Violet, born 18th January 1912, Catherine, born 29th January 1906 and Ethel, born 26th April 1904, of 43 Arcot St. His civilian occupation is given as labourer. William served in No 21st Protection Company, the Royal Defence Corps (service number 3832 (1916)), The Welsh Regiment (service numbers 4190 (1914) & 681). He died in late 1918 or early 1919. William was discharged on 10th May 1916 as being no longer medically fit for service due to rheumatism of the back. This originated before he joined the army but was aggravated by military service. He is described as 5ft 8ins tall with a dark complexion, hazel eyes and dark brown hair turning grey.
