William Coney
William was born in Penarth in 1888, the son of Thomas and Sarah Coney of 12 Maughan Street, Penarth and brother of Reginald. He was a professional soldier and was serving in India in 1911. William served in the 2nd Battalion, the King’s (Shropshire Light Infantry). He was killed in action on 25th February 1916 aged 26 and is commemorated on Panel 47 and 49. Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. From his Army records we know that he was 5ft 5ins or 5ft 6ins tall. He had a fresh complexion, blue eyes and dark brown hair and had 2 scars on his stomach. He was a member of Trinity Wesleyan Church.
