Lionel R Window
Lionel Raymond Charles Window was born in Penarth on 2nd February 1897, the son of Capt. and Mrs. Percival Window, of Rosebank, Cornerswell Rd., Penarth. In 1911 he was living at 10 Cornerswell Road with his father, Percival, brother Kenneth and sisters Constance and Dorothy. He served in Howe Battalion. R.N. Division, the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve as an Able Seaman (service number Wales Z/866). Lionel was killed or died as a direct result of enemy action on 13th November 1916 aged 19 and is commemorated on Pier and Face 1 A., Thiepval Memorial and on grave C. 495 in Penarth Cemetery. From Navy records Lionel is described as being 5ft 7ins tall with an expanded chest measurement of 35ins. He had a fresh complexion, dark brown hair and grey eyes. His civilian occupation was clerk and he was able to swim.
