John W Hand
John William Hand was born in Peterborough in 1881 or 1882. In 1911 he was a buyer and manager and lived at 10 St Augustine’s Place with his wife Alice Maud and their daughter Annie. From Army records – Husband of Alice Maud, father of Annie Gwendoline Jessie, born 19th May 1908 and William Frederick Leonard, born 5th July 1913 of 75 Windsor Rd, Penarth. Alice remarried to become Alice Blackwell. John served in 1st/28th Battalion, London Regiment (Artists’ Rifles) with the rank of Private (service number 764643). He was killed in action on 24th March 1918 and is commemorated on Bay 10., Arras Memorial. From Army records, John is described as being 5ft 7½ins tall with an expanded chest measurement of 36ins. He weighed 136lbs. He was missing and later presumed dead on 24th March 1918. In November 1918 Alice was awarded a pension of 25/5d per week for herself and two children.
