John J Richards
John Jones Richards was born in Penarth. In 1911 he was employed as a butcher and lived at 11 Stanwell Crescent, Penarth with parents John and Eliza Richards and siblings of Sidney, Charles, Gertrude, Arthur, Edith and Millicent. John & Eliza had been married for 31 years and had 15 children, 12 of whom survived. Army records show John as married to Florence nee James at Cardiff Register office on 14th November 1912. They lived at 30 Pembroke Terrace. There were no children. Family is given as parents John and Eliza, siblings William, Sidney, Richard, Arthur, Annie, Martha, Marion, Beatrice & Mildred(?). John served in the Station Staff Supply Company, the Royal Army Service Corps with the rank of Private (service number S/307504). He served in Egypt and died of dysentry / malaria in hospital in Malta. John is buried at C. XVII. 6., Pieta Military Cemetery. From Army records – John Richards is described as a slaughterman / butcher. He was 5ft 1¼ins tall, weighed 135lbs with an expanded chest measurement of 39ins. He is also commemorated on St Paul’s Roll of Honour.
