Frederick G Smith
Frederick George Smith was born in Llandaff in 1890. In 1901 he lived at 145 Windsor Road with his parents John S and Eliza A Smith, siblings Arthur, Charlotte, Thomas, Gladys, Gertrude and Evelyn, grandparents Sarah and Thomas Shepherd and cousin Elizabeth Avery. In 1911 he was a general labourer in a cement works and lived at 125 Windsor Road with his mother, Eliza Smith and siblings Thomas, Gladys, Gertrude and Eveline. Frederick served in the Royal Army Medical Corps (service number 68832) and the 12th Battalion, the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. His rank was Private (service number S/20038). Frederick was killed in action on 19th September 1918 aged 28 and is buried in Dorian Military Cemetery. Army records describe Frederick Smith as being 5′ 10″ tall, weighing 170lb with an expanded chest measurement of 40″. Next of kin mother, Mrs Eliza Ann Smith of 31 Beauchamp St, but name always given as Frederick, not Frederick G or Frederick George Smith.
