Evan Ll James
Evan Llewellyn James was born in Penarth in 1880. In 1911 he was mate on a steam tug and lived at 15 Dock Road, Penarth with his wife Annie and their children Winifred, Annie, Harold, Evan and John. From Army records – husband of Anne nee Gallagher, father of Winifred born 24/08/05, Harold Llewellyn born 28/06/08, Evan George born 13/??/09, John Robert born 06/09/10, Annie Margaret born ??/01/13, Vivian Donald born 19/09/12 and Alfred born 06/03/14 and died 01/10/14. Evan served in Class W Army Reserve, the Royal Field & Horse Artillery. His service numbers were 32/5098 – 1914; 29467 – 1917. He died on 14th May 1918. From Army records – 1914 – Master mariner. Discharged as no longer physically fit 13th December 1917 and awarded a pension. He died on 14th May 1918. In 1914 he is described as being 5ft 9½ins tall, weighing 138lbs with a chest measurement of 37 ins. He had a dark complexion, blue eyes and brown hair but on discharge in 1917 he is described as 5ft 8ins tall with a fair complexion, bluish grey eyes and dark hair turning grey and with a tattoo on his left hand. In 1916 he was in hospital suffering from phthisis (TB) but the disability that led to discharge is ‘aortic regurgitation’ (blood leaks back through the aortic valve as the valve does not close properly). He is also commemorated on St Paul’s Roll of Honour.
