Alfred Meadows
Alfred Charles Aloysisus Meadows was born in Penarth in 1893. In 1911 he was working as a jobbing gardener and lived at 37 Salop Place, Penarth with his parents Alfred and Susan Mary Meadows and siblings Alice, Beatrice, Lucy and Alfred. Alfred served in the 8th (Service) Battalion, the South Lancashire Regiment having enlisted in 1914 aged 21. His rank was Lance Corporal (service number 14450). Alfred died on 8th June 1917 aged 24 and is commemorated on Panel 37., Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. From Army records: He gave his trade as collier. Described as being 5ft 5¼ins tall, weight 143lb with an expanded chest measurement of 37¾ins, fair complexion, blue eyes and fair hair. Family given as Alfred and Susan Mary Matthews (parents), William, George & Alfred (brothers), Mary, Alice & Lucy (sisters). He is commemorated on St Paul’s Roll of Honour under the name Charles Meadows.
