George H Westacott
George H Westacott (George Herbert Westecott) was born in 1879. He was the son of William and Thurza Westecott, brother of James and Daisy and of Gertie James and uncle of Dolly and Gertie James. In 1911 the family lived at 26 Arcot St, Penarth and George was employed as a bricklayer. He served in 3/1st Glamorgan Field Company, the Royal Engineers (service numbers 353 / 483) and the 6th Battalion, the Leicestershire Regiment (service number 37883) with the rank of Private. George was killed in action on 7th October1917 aged 39 and he is commemorated on Panel 50 to 51, Tyne Cot Memorial and grave H100 in St Augustine’s churchyard. From Army records – A bricklayer in civilian life he is described as being 5ft 1½ins tall with an expanded chest measurement of 34ins. He weighed 122lbs.
