George F Wherley
George Frederick Wherley
George was born in Penarth, the son of Carl and Bertha Wehrley (German citizens), brother of Leopold Ernest, Bertha Louise, Maria Matilda Noel and Albert Victor Wehrley. In 1911 the family lived at 26 Windsor Terrace, Penarth. George was a photographer and Carl was a public billiard room proprietor. All the children of the family were born in Penarth. From Army records – parents CF & B Wherley, brothers L.E., C.H. (in South Africa), & A.V.; sisters B.L. & M.N. Wherley. He served in the Royal Garrison Artillery (service number 44210) and the 2nd Battalion, the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. His rank was Sergeant (service number 31174). George was killed in action on 22nd December 1916 aged 26 and is commemorated on Pier and Face 4 A., Thiepval Memorial. From Army records – Civilian occupation given as shop assistant, George Wherley is described as being 5ft 10ins tall, weighing 119lb and with an expanded chest measurement of 34ins. He had a fresh complexion, blue eyes and dark hair.
