Eric B Smailes
Eric Bramall Smailes was born in Cardiff on 22nd November 1899. In 1911 he was living at Monkton House, Holmesdale Place, Penarth with his parents George and Mary Smailes and brothers Thomas and George. Eric served in 104th Squadron the Royal Flying Corps / Royal Air Force with the rank of Second Lieutenant, Trade: Observer (service number 117400). He died on 13th September 1918 aged 18 and is buried at I. F. 15., Niederzwehren Cemetery. He is also commemorated on grave C81 in Penarth Cemetery. From Forces records – Missing, possibly taken Prisoner of War 7th September 1918. Described as a clerk, 5ft 5½ins tall, weight 131lb with an expanded chest measurement of 34ins.
