George H Wright
George Henry Wright was born in Warwick. He was the son of Thomas and Jane Wright, of 20, High Street, Penarth, and husband of Ada Emily Wright. In 1911 he was living with his wife, Ada and stepchildren William and Kathleen Rees at 18 Plassey St, Penarth. He was working as a labourer. He served in the 1st Battalion, the Gloucestershire Regiment with the rank was Private (service number 6573). George died of wounds on 24th November 1914 aged 34 and is buried at 1. B. 19. Wimereux Communal Cemetery. From the ‘Penarth Times’ 4th December 2014 from the ‘This Day in History’ column. ‘The following report tells of a (sic) severe injuries of a Penarth man at the front: We regret to learn of the very serious injuries sustained by George Wright, son of Mr. Thomas Wright, of Ludlow Street, Penarth. George is now in the 14th General, Boulogne Base, BE Force Overseas. A letter to hand from the hospital states that he has been very badly wounded, the worst injury being to his leg, which was amputated at the knee on November 17. He was also shot in the hand, losing one of his fingers and less severely on the lip. Wright was taken into hospital on the 16th inst. The writer of the letter is Mrs Lane, wife of Major Lane, R.A.M.C who is in the command of one diversion (sic) of the hospital.’
