George Harold Gallagher
George was born in Penarth in 1885. He married Rose Wilson and in 1911 they lived at 24 James Street (now Coronation Terrace) with their daughters Phyllis and Gladys. George was employed as a dock labourer. From Army records – Husband of Rose Phillipa nee Wilson, father of Phyllis Mary, born 5th July 1908 died 26th October 1918, Gladys Mary born 14th July 1910, Molly Henrietta born 5th April 1914, Rosemary Doreen born 5th May 1916. He enlisted in October 1915 and served in the Inland Water Transport, the Royal Engineers with the rank of Lance Corporal (service numbers WR/501389 & WR/501390). George was accidentally drowned in the River Seine while trying to save the life of a French civilian who also drowned. He died on 9th January 1919 aged 33 and is buried in 6. 20. 9., City of Paris Cemetery, Pantin. From Army records he is described as being 5ft 6¾ tall with an expanded chest measurement of 34½ins. He weighed 126lb.
